Here's the deal - if you refuse to pay more than $10 for a room don't complain when it's not very nice.
If you are rude to people they will be rude back.
If you enter every transaction thinking that the other person is a crook who is about to rip you off then they'll probably think "**** you" and do just that.
If you can afford an around the world trip then you are not poor.
Backpackers are not an ethnic group that need some kind of special treatment.
If you are "on a budget" then perhaps consider a shorter break. That way you'll be able to afford better places and everyone else will benefit when you go home sooner.
Dressing for the beach in Hanoi or HCMC will make you look like a tosser. People will treat you like a tosser.
